All That We Destroy

This is the culminating video of everything I collected. I tried to frame the experience of waling through the city and seeing everything that we normally pass by without a second thought. It is a combination of all my rough cuts that shows the contrast between hard and soft objects, both of which are broken.

Hard but Broken

For this sound rough cut, I focused on the images of all the hard things that I encountered on my drifts. In the production of this video, I arranged the images and video first and then added the sound to that. It was interesting to see the difference this produced between my two sound rough cuts.

Broken but Soft

When I was reviewing the footage I had collected, I noticed that it split into two categories relatively neatly, those being hard objects and soft objects all of which were broken or damaged in some way. This first sound rough cut thus shows how there are many things that are broken but still retain their innate characteristic of softness. The approach I took to each sound rough cut also differed as well as the subject matter. For the 'Soft' rough cut, I edited a sound track together first from the sounds I collected and then added the images to that. This really helped the sound and the images to sync together very nicely.

Wind and Time

This second rough cut shows some shots of the power of wind and also time's power to erode and wear down all things.

Passerby

This video examines some of the more interesting things that I saw on the ground well on my walk that are usually passed by without thought or examination by most people. I used more of a fast editing technique in this rough cut to emphasize how much is out there that we usually miss.

Production Strategy

While I was out on my drift I needed a way to narrow down everything that was around me so I could focus on only a couple of things to visually record. I decided to take pictures or video of only broken or decrepit things as well as objects that were out of place. I ended up doing a lot of close-ups as well, which gave me lots of interesting shots and new perspective of objects. For my sounds I decided to retrace the same route that I ended up doing for my image capturing walk. On this walk I recorded anything that was interesting and did lots of longer recordings just to see what I would get.

Drift Map and Straedy

For my second drift I wanted to get out of the neighborhoods and explore the downtown area more. So I started at the corner of North and Farwell Ave. and decided to make my way in a general southern direction. I kept my route unpredictable by putting 6 slips of paper in my pocket; two said 'right', two said 'left', and two said 'straight'. I would choose one of these at every intersection unless I decided to supersede them and correct to head a little more in a southerly direction so I would end up downtown. I ended up having to break this drift up into two seperate parts but I picked up the second right from where I ended the first. You can see exactly where I went and some of the things I experienced by clicking on this map.
